The two GTA 6 editions, the 12 November preload, and the code in the box
Two editions, one upgrade add-on, two bonuses with different deadlines, and a physical release that contains no disc. What is on the storefronts, and what nobody has answered yet.
There are two editions of Grand Theft Auto VI and no more. Rockstar’s own edition selector on the GTA VI site defines exactly two keys, standard and ultimate. No third edition key appears in the page payload.
Standard is 79.99 USD, Ultimate 99.99 USD. Those are the PlayStation Store figures, and the Xbox catalog returns the same two numbers as both list price and MSRP.
There is a third thing on sale, and it is not an edition. The Ultimate Edition Upgrade is a standalone add-on at 20.00 USD. On Xbox it is listed and pre-orderable. On the PlayStation Store the same add-on sits under Add-Ons with the state “Pre-Order Unavailable”. The arithmetic is plain: 79.99 plus 20.00 is 99.99, so the two-step route costs what the one-step route costs.
What each edition actually contains
The PlayStation listing for Standard names three things: the game, the Vintage Vice City Pack, and one month of GTA+. Ultimate names those three plus the Ultimate Edition Upgrade.
The Ultimate Edition adds sixteen items on top of that. Vehicles and weapons are half of it: a ‘95 Grotti Cheetah, a pair of Hawk and Little Morgan revolvers, engraved sidearms for Jason and Lucia, a Dinka Enduro motorcycle, a ‘67 Vapid Dominator buggy with a garage in Watson Bay.
Five of the sixteen are not items you get, they are places that stay shut. Rockstar’s description of each ends with the same sentence: “Only open for business with the Ultimate Edition.” Those five are Rideout Customs, Sara’s Unisex Salon, Stock 305, Electric Fang Tattoo and One-Eyed Willie’s. Two mod shops, a salon, a clothing store and a tattoo parlor.
Rockstar also states that none of this arrives in one lump: “Ultimate Edition bonuses are threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter.”
Neither edition grants earlier access to the game itself.
Two bonuses, two different deadlines
The Vintage Vice City Pack is the ‘55 Vapid Stanier sedan with a garage near Ocean Beach, outfits and hairstyles for both protagonists, and a weapon pattern that Rockstar says covers “most” guns. Note the word. It ships with both editions, not just Ultimate.
Its deadline is not launch day. Rockstar: “All Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders and purchases before November 20 will get the Vintage Vice City Pack.” The stores word that cutoff their own way. The Xbox listing, re-read on 11 September, reads “Purchase prior to 19 November 2026 23:59:59 to receive: The Vintage Vice City Pack, One Month of GTA+”. Sony’s listing carries “Purchase prior to November 20” and the line “Offer ends November 19th 2026” on the same page. They resolve to the same instant.
The GTA+ month is narrower. Rockstar labels it a digital store pre-order bonus, and the Newswire qualifies it the same way: “details on a free month of GTA+ included with digital pre-orders”. The Xbox listing puts a clock on it: the month “must be redeemed within 180 days after placing your pre-order,” which for a buyer who ordered on 25 June 2026 runs out in late December 2026.
Both storefronts describe Grand Theft Auto VI itself as a single-player experience.
What 12 November means
Rockstar: “Players who pre-order digital versions of Grand Theft Auto VI will be able to begin pre-loading on November 12 to ensure they are able to play at launch on November 19.” Both PlayStation editions carry a 7-Day Pre-load tag.
The files land a week early. The game does not. Xbox declares the US release instant as 2026-11-19T05:00:00Z, which is midnight Eastern, and the pre-order window ends one second before local midnight on 19 November 2026. Unlock is per store market, not one global countdown: the French PlayStation page resolves to midnight CET, the Korean page to midnight KST.
Why the box holds a code
Rockstar’s FAQ, verbatim: “The physical version of GTAVI will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12. A disc will not be included in the box.” It adds: “An internet connection and platform account are required to download the game.”
That is also why the box reaches shelves on 12 November 2026 rather than 19 November 2026. It is not a copy of the game arriving early, it is a preload key arriving in time to be useful. Rockstar Store shipping starts 12 November 2026, while supplies last, to twenty countries.
PlayStation codes are region locked in three bands: codes shipped to the US and Canada work only on accounts registered there, UK-shipped codes work only on UK accounts, and codes shipped elsewhere in Europe work only on accounts registered in a named list of seventeen countries. Rockstar’s FAQ covers PlayStation only.
Rockstar has published no reason for dropping the disc. Press filled the gap. IGN, Alinea Analytics and Enders Analysis all read it as secrecy plus the removal of the second-hand market. Elliott of Alinea: “As long as cheap second-hand copies exist, they set a price floor Rockstar can’t control. Remove the disc and Rockstar and the platforms own the entire price curve.” S&P Global’s Neil Barbour noted that Take-Two already ran 97 percent of fiscal 2026 revenue through digital channels.
Two retailers have said they will not stock the box: Video Games Plus, a Canadian shop of nearly 40 years, and the independent Loot Box Gaming, both citing policies against code-in-box products. IGN notes the other consequence: trade-ins stop existing.
What nobody has answered
- The monthly price of GTA+. Rockstar’s page renders no figure without a region, so the free month cannot be valued.
- Whether a code-in-box buyer can claim that month at all. Rockstar has not addressed the case.
- Whether Xbox codes are region locked the way PlayStation codes are. The FAQ is silent.
- Whether preload starts by itself on 12 November 2026 for buyers who never touched the auto-download setting.
- Whether the Vintage Vice City Pack goes on sale later. PC Gamer expects it to. Rockstar has said nothing.
- Whether the code can be resold or shared. The BBC reported people asking exactly that. No answer has been published.
Six gaps, all on the practical side of the purchase. Nothing published by Rockstar or either store closes any of them.
