Is the GTA 6 map really three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2?
The multiplier traces to one studio briefing. The two figures it produced do not reconcile with each other, and Rockstar's own on-record words about the map contain no number at all.
The figure in circulation is that the GTA 6 map is three times the size of the Red Dead Redemption 2 map, and twice the size of GTA V’s. The two numbers come from the same place, they do not reconcile with each other, and the multiplier has never appeared in Rockstar’s own words.
Where the multiplier came from
A creator briefing. The YouTuber TGG visited Rockstar North, saw about three hours of the game, and relayed a comparison: twice the size of GTA V’s map, three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s map, Vice City itself twice the size of Los Santos.
That is not nothing. A creator who was in the building, relaying after a studio visit, is where the figure starts. It is also a single origin, and almost everything downstream of it is that briefing rewritten. A comparison relayed from one briefing is one source, however many outlets restate it.
Every subsequent headline traces either to that briefing or to one newspaper piece.
The second route, which we could not open
The second route is a newspaper piece of 27 August 2026, which our fact base records as attributing to Rockstar Games the statement that the map is “three times larger than the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2”. Note the qualifier. Playable area is a narrower thing than map, and it is the first casualty when the line gets compressed into a headline.
We could not read that piece. It sits behind a paywall, and our own fact base cites the newspaper’s domain rather than the article. That is a finding about our records, not about the newspaper, and it belongs on the page rather than in a private note. A citation nobody on this site has opened is not a source we can stand behind, so it carries no entry in the sources block below, and nothing in this article rests on it.
Why the two figures contradict each other
Take the briefing at face value. Twice GTA V and three times Red Dead Redemption 2, both at once. Those two ratios only hold together if the GTA V map is larger than the Red Dead Redemption 2 map. If it is the other way around, one of the two numbers is wrong.
PC Gamer noticed this in print and said so at the time. What nobody did was source it. The contradiction was flagged and never resolved, and the pair kept circulating.
Our own reading, and it is ours rather than anything in the record: either the briefing gave two figures measured against different things, in which case both can be true and neither tells you the size of anything on its own, or one of the two comparisons is the wrong way round. Nothing we have read settles which.
What Rockstar has actually said
On the record, through a named executive, this is the whole of it. Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, speaking to IGN:
It’s a big map, a very big map.
And on the ambition behind it:
… doing everything we possibly can to create the largest, deepest, most densely populated and complex world we have ever built for people to get lost in.
No multiplier. No area. The claim that this is the largest world Rockstar has ever built is a claim about its own back catalog, and it is a different claim from any ratio. Nelson’s own comparison to Red Dead Redemption 2 is about density and discovery rather than size. IGN’s dedicated map size piece, the one whose address reads “rockstar confirms”, carries no multiplier anywhere in it.
There is no absolute number anywhere
No square mile or square kilometer figure for the GTA 6 map exists in any Rockstar or Take-Two source we have read. Every number in circulation is a ratio, and every ratio traces back to one briefing.
This is why the stamp on this article is reported rather than confirmed. Reported is the stamp for a claim asserted by a named journalist or publication with no first-party document behind it. Confirmed would mean Rockstar said it on a surface Rockstar controls, in words anyone can go and read. That has not happened for any number about the size of this map.
What is actually known
The map is large, and Rockstar says so in general terms. The three times figure is what a creator relayed after a studio visit. The second route, the newspaper piece of 27 August 2026, is one nobody here could open, so it carries no source line. Beyond that, the record is a ratio with a contradiction in it and no absolute figure on either end.
If a site tells you the GTA 6 map is a specific number of square miles, ask where the number came from. There is no published one.
